Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

1. Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.

2. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

Duties Description This position is a skilled trades responsible for the mechanic and technician duties within the Regional Maintenance Center located at Belmont Lake State Park. In this position, the Service & Repair Mechanic’s primary responsibility is to perform journey-level motor equipment repair. The Service & Repair Mechanic will perform duties related to the replacement of rusted or damaged body parts, perform metal fabrication, plasma cutting and mechanical repairs, including engine and drive line repairs, brake and front end work, electronic diagnosis, and emission repairs. The Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment as well as engine and component repair of construction and golf course equipment. In addition, the Service & Repair Mechanic will be expected to perform NYS vehicle inspections. The Service & Repair Mechanic must have a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the craft to which assigned and have the ability to train others, lay out work and diagnose problems; read and interpret plans, diagrams and specifications, must be able to work independently and understand and carry out written and oral instructions. The Service & Repair Mechanic will perform supervisory duties for lower-level or seasonal garage employees, and insure that instructions have been followed and the quality of work is satisfactory.

1. Diagnoses the cause of breakdowns and for performing major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled mowers, tractors, attachments, vehicles and equipment.
2. Works on various equipment such as heavy and light trucks, bulldozers, excavators, compressors, rollers, various mowing equipment, and chain saws and other small-engine equipment, as well as perform routine preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspections on a routine basis.
3. Performs various welding and metal fabrication duties as needed. Metal fabrication will involve not only motor equipment but also fabrication for various purposes as needed.
4. Operates and supervises the machine shop, which houses various specialized equipment for fabrication and metal working.
5. Supervises lower level staff as needed.
6. Required to operate various motor vehicles for towing/hauling and snow plowing/removal as needed.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS
• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with tow truck/ wrecker endorsement or be able to obtain it within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License as a term and condition of employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid certification as a NYS Department of Motor Vehicle Inspector as a term and condition of employment.
• Experience on gas or diesel engines, hydraulic systems, reel and blade maintenance, spray rig pumps and irrigation pumps preferred.
** Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
