Minimum Qualifications SG 18 - Bachelor's Degree and two years of professional research experience in the appropriate field, or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and one year of professional research experience in that field. SG 22 - Bachelor's Degree and three years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong background in aquatic microbiology and molecular biology. Experience with microscopic identification of cyanobacteria and quantitation of cyanobacterial toxins using ELISA as well as experience with bacterial culture techniques. Experience with performing and analyzing TaqMan-based real time-PCR and/or digital PCR assays is highly desired. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential. Experience working in an accredited microbiology lab will be considered favorably.


Duties Description The Environmental Biology Laboratory analyzes water samples submitted by state agencies and local health departments for algal toxins and numerous waterborne pathogens and responds to associated public health emergencies. The incumbent will serve as the lead analyst for the Toxic Algae program, responsibilities include analyzing samples, reporting and documenting results, ordering supplies, performing routine quality assurance procedures, among other programmatic functions required to maintain accreditation. In addition, as a secondary support analyst for the Legionella testing program, the incumbent will assist with processing samples for outbreak investigations. Candidates will also be expected to aid in investigating rapid and more accurate alternatives to current waterborne pathogen testing methodologies. Other lab duties will include assisting with critical water bacteriology analyses.
