Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current DOH employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as a Public Health Sanitarian, Grade 14, OR current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a qualified title Grade 11 or higher, and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Public Candidates for Provisional Opportunity (Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications):

For Sanitarian Trainee, NS: Either A. a bachelor's degree, including 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences; of which at least 18 credits are in the natural sciences (defined below); Or B. an associate's degree in the natural sciences AND 4 years of experience in environmental health protection (defined below).

For Public Health Sanitarian, G-14: Either A. a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences (defined below); Or B. a bachelor's degree, including 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences, of which at least 18 credits are in the natural sciences, AND one year of experience in environmental health protection (defined below); Or C. an associate's degree in the natural sciences AND 5 years experience in environmental health protection (defined below).

**Natural sciences that are considered appropriate are biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences (geology and hydrology).
***Applied sciences include science-based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control, and food science.

Experience in environmental health protection is defined as conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state, or local environmental laws, regulations, and established public health standards, OR experience in the notification of public health environmental hazards and the development of methods to eliminate or control such hazards and/or the spread of disease and other environmental factors impacting the health of individuals and/or the public, such as in hospitals and long term care facilities.
Substitution: a master's degree in the natural or applied sciences may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.

Duties Description As a Sanitarian Trainee or Public Health Sanitarian, you would conduct environmental health inspections to confirm compliance with the Public Health Law and State Sanitary Code. You would be responsible for documentation, citiing deficiences to facility operators, reviewing facility plans for appropriateness and viability, and conducting follow-up vists to determine ongoing compliance. Areas of assignment may include but are not limited to, restaurants, children's camps, hotels/motels and temporary residences, pools/beaches, mass gatherings, and include the inspection of community, non-community, and non-transient no-community water systems. You may also assist with health-related investigations and responses to chemical exposures or emergencies.

Additional Comments Permanent, or provisional full-time competitive appointment. Provisional opportunities pending canvass outcome. Travel to areas not served by public transportation is required (30%).
