Duties Description STANDARD DUTIES:

The Deputy Commissioner for Worker Protection is responsible for overall operations of the New York State Department of Labor’s Worker Protection Division. The role will lead the Division with a high level of attention to detail and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team. Must be a resourceful problem-solver and possess strong leadership skills to provide customer centric service delivery. A strong ability to drive change while improving efficiencies and process is essential. The position reports directly to the Executive Deputy Commissioner and is a member of the Commissioner’s Executive Team. The protection of workers and employers are critical to the mission of the New York State Department of Labor.

• Direct and provide guidance for leadership of the Division of Safety and Health, the Division of Labor Standards, the Division of Immigrant Policy and Affairs, the Office of Special Investigations, and the Bureau of Public Work
• Responsible for ensuring rigorous, fair, and consistent enforcement of labor laws across New York State and implementing innovative programs designed to increase business compliance and enhance economic security for all workers.
• Chair enforcement and special initiatives of the Governor’s Joint Task Force including industry specific programs, criminal prosecution efforts, and community/labor partnerships.
• Work closely alongside other Executive Staff and Divisional leadership to develop and implement short and long-term strategic plans and performance measures.
• Ensure adequate legal resources is devoted to complex cases that arise across the Division.
• Address systemic barriers that prevent workers, employers, and industry stakeholders from seamlessly interfacing with the Division and agency, including implementation of technology-related and other solutions.
• Represent the Department at high level meetings, conferences, and other public events. Lead broad based public awareness efforts to enhance awareness and compliance with labor laws and other worker protections.
• Work closely alongside other Executive and Senior leadership to enhance the overall strength, effectiveness, diversity, accessibility, and visibility of the agency’s role.
• Execute special assignments made by the Commissioner of Labor or Executive Deputy Commissioner of Labor whether directly related to Worker Protection or other areas of the Department.
• Partner actively with counterparts at the federal level to ensure that state resources are utilized in an optimal manner to achieve the Division’s objectives and to minimize duplication of effort between related state and federal programs where there is dual jurisdiction.
• Conduct ongoing review of Division service delivery with accompanying metrics, data, and KPI information to innovate and improve customer experiences
• Conduct overall operational review to identify technology, processes, policy and program changes to improve productivity.
• Conduct effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention.
• Ensure ongoing review of Worker Protection Division policy and procedures to identity, recommend, and initiate changes and improvements
