Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications "Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.
Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with molecular methods for the detection and/or characterization of viral pathogens. Experience with developing or assessing molecular methods. Experience handling human pathogens. Experience writing and presenting oral scientific communications.
Duties Description The incumbent will supervise and coordinate the work of the General Viral Culture (GVL) and Influenza Isolation Laboratories (IIL) in the Laboratory of Viral Diseases (LVD). For reasons of workload, space needs, methodology, and scientific necessity (assuring pure influenza cultures for the National Influenza Reference Center in the IIL), the work of these two laboratories are located in separate but adjacent laboratory modules. However, it would be optimal to have them coordinated under a single supervisor and some aspects of the work harmonized with cross-trained staff. Further, to oversee the development of more rapid, sensitive and automated culture methods in the GVL, serve as a senior scientific advisor and coordinator for viral culture work on any LVD projects or those of scientific investigators external to LVD, and manage all culture-associated databases including those for phenotypic and genotypic characterization data. Additionally, to manage the Collaborative Research Agreement with Zeptometrix, a royalty-generating contract which has been in operation for more than 10 years.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
