Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science or a closely related degree and four years of professional post-degree scientific research experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above mentioned fields and three years of post-degree professional scientific research; or a Doctorate in one of the above mentioned fields and one year of post degree professional scientific research.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a graduate degree in epidemiology; experience in cancer epidemiology or cancer surveillance; experience conducting statistical analyses; knowledge of statistical/data management software including SAS and SQL; experience writing epidemiologic reports; experience supervising staff; experience presenting to professional and lay audiences; strong organizational skills; and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Duties Description Under the general direction of the Director of the Bureau of Cancer Epidemiology, the incumbent will serve as Director of the Cancer Surveillance Program, which has primary responsibility for responding to inquiries from the public regarding cancer incidence in small geographic areas or among defined populations. The incumbent will conduct investigations and prepare epidemiological reports in response to these inquiries. The incumbent will supervise professional staff in support of these activities and will chair meetings of the Cancer Surveillance Advisory Committee. The position involves significant collaboration and coordination with other units in the Bureau and the Department (e.g., Center for Environmental Health). The incumbent will have considerable contact with the public regarding the conduct, status, and findings of surveillance investigations. The position provides opportunities to participate in special projects and research in line with the incumbent’s expertise and interests. Occasional overnight travel to locations not served by public transportation is required.

Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Routine travel, including occasional overnight travel and travel to areas which may not be served by public transportation, is required. (~10%).
