Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree in Conservation and two years of professional experience OR seven years of professional experience as a Conservator; work experience must be in area of specialization: Paintings.
Duties Description The Conservator will report to the head of the Conservation Unit, within the Bureau of Historic Site and Park Services. This Conservator position will specialize in the care and restoration of paintings. This position is one of seven professional conservator titles assigned to the Conservation Unit. Conservators are further defined by an area of specialization consistent with their education, training and experience. All conservators are expected to adhere to the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. The conservator will work primarily to preserve and protect paintings of historic and artistic value from deterioration and damage and to restore such paintings which have suffered deterioration and damage. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Conduct general on-site surveys of paintings in the collections to access and record their condition and, if necessary, to identify and prioritize a course of treatment.
• Perform in depth examination of individual paintings to determine condition and in some instances to investigate authenticity, faults and damages, losses, deterioration products and subsequent additions or restorations using specialized photography and radiography, knowledge of painting styles and mediums, and other analytical methods.
• Measuring and monitoring the environmental conditions in which the paintings are exhibited or stored to ensure that hazards and deteriorating agents (temperature, humidity, radiance, particulates, etc.) are minimized.
• Determines if painting require cleaning or repair and what the best and safest methods should be used to restore the painting.
• Treatment to repair damage to paintings from accident, vandalism, fires, floods, insects, and micro-organisms.
• Stabilization of fragile paintings by appropriate methods.
• When appropriate, replacement of lost parts of paintings by in-painting or re-adhesion of paint fragments.
• Preparation of paintings for exhibition and display using appropriate methods.
• Collaboration with Frames and Gilt Objects Conservator as necessary to preserve the most historically accurate frames for display of paintings.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a team.
• Be able to lift at least 50 pounds;
• Be able to stand for long periods of time and be comfortable using/climbing on scaffolding
• Possess and maintain a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of appointment;
• Be proficient in the use of digital photography, word-processing software and creating/using spreadsheets (especially MS Office).
