Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Six years of experience in providing assistance to or helping constituents, clients or citizens understand and participate in public and private programs, one year of which must have been in human services and/or the attainment of United States citizenship. Fluency in speaking, reading, writing and oral comprehension of an appropriate language is required. Candidates must be able to communicate at a native level of fluency and demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to cultural issues and nuances. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of the required experience. A master’s degree may substitute for five years of the required experience.

Duties Description The Immigrant Community Specialist 1 duties will include but are not limited to the following:

• Monitor various contractual documents and prepare periodic compliance reports of unit activities for review. Ensures that procedures for providing services to target recipients are monitored and adjusted to ensure the smooth flow of work which will included thorough site visits.

• Respond to requests for information from new Americans, service providers, public officials and the general public. May meet directly with individuals or groups to provide information and answer questions.

• Provide information on and referral of immigration issues including U.S. citizenship and temporary assistance programs and services. Help develop partnerships across the ONA network and state agencies and identify areas of growth for immigrant communities.

• Assist in the coordination of immigration workshops throughout New York State. Target outreach to new immigrant populations, based on most current census and resettlement data available.

• Under the direction of a supervisor, provide ombudsman services to immigrants. Respond to constituent calls and letters regarding immigration matters and other concerns. Follow-up with appropriate federal, state and local agencies.

• Provide referrals to Citizenship contract providers for legal immigration assistance. Direct legal assistance to immigrants to assist with their transition to life in the United States.

• Assist with services to immigrants and other new Americans with other agencies. Ensures the availability of social and economic assistance to new Americans and their families.

• Provide technical assistance and professional development opportunities for the organizations ONA is contracting with.

• Other duties as applicable.
