Duties Description Design Positions

As a Construction Specialist 1 in the Highway Design Group, your typical duties will include but are not limited to: design of capital roadway or bridge projects including preparation of estimates, engineering drawings utilizing 2D/3D CADD applications, project reports, field inspection of project sites or existing infrastructure, quality control review of project documents prepared by others for consistency with department standards and for constructability, and participation in public outreach.

As a Construction Specialist 1 in the survey or Right-of -way mapping group. your typical duties will include but are not limited to:

In the Survey group you would be an assistant on a survey crew performing complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas which will include the use of various computer applications and advanced survey equipment. Activities would involve the collection of spatial data, data reduction, survey map production, and preparation of various reports. These duties would require working in the field and office.

In the Right-of-Way mapping group, you would utilize various mapping and coordinate geometry software as well as perform research / evaluate record documents pertinent to the preparation of the various mapping products.

Construction Position

As a Construction Specialist 1 functioning as the Regional Construction Safety Coordinator, duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Reviewing and approving health and safety plans submitted by contractors performing work on NYSDOT construction contracts and conducting a safety meeting at the start of each project.

Coordinating the processing and submission of incident and injury reports to Regional and Main Office functional groups.

Providing basic safety training and guidance to Department construction inspection staff on matters involving safety and providing staff with monthly toolbox safety topics.

Serving as a member of both the Regional Safety team and the team reviewing work zone traffic control on capital construction projects and maintenance activities.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Additional Comments *Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through December 31, 2022 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
