Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Research Scientist 1 (Toxic Substances), Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience with data management as well as evaluating and interpreting scientific data using statistical methods. It is preferred that the candidate have experience working with SAS or other statistical data analysis software. The preferred candidate will also have experience writing or contributing to scientific reports and/or peer-reviewed scientific papers, and refining complex scientific information to produce clear and concise summaries. Knowledge of contaminant fate and transport principles, a basic understanding of fisheries and aquatic ecology, experience with, or coursework in, human health risk assessment or toxicology, and experience with Excel, Microsoft Access, and Word are also preferred.

Duties Description The Research Scientist will support the Department's Fish and Game Advisory Program by assessing health risks due to exposure to contaminants such as mercury in sportfish collected from New York State’s Great Lakes and other waters.

The incumbent will be responsible for fish contaminant concentration data management, statistical analysis, and interpretation for the purposes of developing human health risk-based regional and waterbody-specific advice for the public. Duties will include managing data in spreadsheets and databases; identifying and applying appropriate statistical methods using software such as SAS to identify regional and temporal patterns; contributing to data summaries and graphical representations to facilitate recommendations for human health risk management; assisting with translation of findings and conclusions into public health messages; contributing to the preparation of technical reports/manuscripts, presentations, outreach and educational materials; and outreach to vulnerable communities and interaction with other State and federal agencies.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, full-time, appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%).
