Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific studies and data, and knowledge of chemical or physical environmental agents and their public health implications in areas such as chemical spills or releases, natural disasters, energy development, indoor air quality, or ambient air quality. Preference will be given to candidates with experience conducting human health risk assessments; excellent written and oral communication skills for both technical and general audiences; strong data management and analysis skills; and good organizational skills.

Duties Description The Research Scientist will provide technical professional research support in evaluating potential public health impacts of chemicals present in air, water, soil, food, and consumer products using qualitative and quantitative risk assessment concepts and recommending approaches to reduce risk.

This includes developing the scientific basis for health-based standards and guidelines for chemicals in drinking water, air, soil, and consumer products. The incumbent will be responsible for developing or contributing to a variety of types of written reports describing the risk analyses in a timely manner, and for responding to public inquiries orally and in writing. The position will require understanding of the principles of toxicology, chemical behavior in the human body, exposure assessment, and risk assessment. The incumbent may also respond to public inquiries on a variety of environmental health subjects in a timely manner. 

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, full-time, appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (10%).
