Minimum Qualifications One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in this title.

Provisional Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree and two years of experience working with students between the ages of 10 and 21 years in one or more of the following areas: teaching employment-related subjects, job readiness and/or career awareness skills; vocational assessment; employment counseling; career exploration, conducting job searches; supervising youth employment training programs; or coordinating structured school-to-work activities.
OR
A bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with students between the ages of 10 and 21 years in one or more of the following areas: teaching employment-related subjects, job readiness and/or career awareness skills; vocational assessment; employment counseling; career exploration, conducting job searches; supervising youth employment training programs; or coordinating structured school-to-work activities AND one year of experience as a supervisor of teaching staff in a vocational shop program.
Qualifying experience includes Career and Technical Teacher (Adolescent Education Grades 7-12) in subjects such as vehicle mechanical repair, cosmetology/barbering, culinary careers, electrical, and other vocational and trade-specific areas; Adolescent Guidance Counselor; Vocational Counselor.
This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.

Duties Description As a Vocational Specialist 1 you would serve as a member of a treatment team at an OCFS secure, limited secure or non-secure treatment center for court placed/committed youth.
Under general supervision, assess the vocational needs of individual youth, develop and follow individual academic and career education plans, provide job readiness instruction, including employment counseling services, oversee development of youth portfolios (vocational folders), supervise work-based learning programs, and assist in job development efforts.
Supervise Vocational Instructors in the implementation of the various components of the career education and employment training program.
Additional duties will be discussed in detail during the interview.

Additional Comments Background Investigation Requirements:

1) All prospective employees will be investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees.

2) All prospective employees will be screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees will be required to pay any necessary fees.

3) For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) prospective appointees will be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable.
