Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
•University degree in communications, journalism, advertising, public relations, or equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
•5-7 years of experience in news, social media, communications, or public relations required.
•Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in public communication preferred.
•Excellent verbal, written, creative, and interpersonal communication skills.
•Experience preparing senior leaders for speaking events, interviews, and editorial board meetings.
•Experience responding to reporter and inquiries from the public.
•Ability to create news releases, newsletters, op-eds, fact sheets and other external-facing publications.
•Familiarity with relevant information technology including social media platforms and web site content.
•Experience in open data trends and practices.
•Proficiency or willingness to learn in desktop publishing software and graphic design.
•The ability to work independently or with others to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
•Working knowledge of the agency’s organization, core functions, goals, and programs.
•Ability to write educational and informational materials clearly and accurately.
•Knowledge of or willingness to learn applicable Ethics and Lobbying laws.
Duties Description The NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (“Commission”) seeks an Assistant Director of Communications (“Assistant Director”) to assist the Director of Communications & Public Affairs / Public Information Officer with developing and implementing the Commission’s communication strategy and performing a wide range of public information activities. While much of the Commission’s work is confidential, the Assistant Director must balance the confidentiality requirements of the Commission's work with the public's access to information about the Commission and the extensive filings maintained by the Commission that are available to members of the public and media. In addition, the Assistant Director shall assist with the Commission’s mandate to provide guidance to those under its jurisdiction through publications and its educational program.
