Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you must have:
•Minimum five years’ experience
•Strong writing and oratory skills
•Management experience in a legislative, political, or governmental context is preferred
All candidates are expected to live and work in the Capital Region of New York. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated legislative experience in relevant areas including Education, Higher Education, Labor, and Civil Service/Pensions.
Candidates who possess a Juris Doctor shall be considered for Assistant Deputy Counsel; candidates possessing similar relevant experience and educational achievement may be alternatively considered for the title of Assistant Deputy Director on a case-by-case basis.
Duties Description The New York State Senate is seeking applicants to fill the position of Assistant Deputy Counsel for the Senate Majority Counsel’s Office. The position of Assistant Deputy Counsel is responsible for performing the following duties:
•Supervise Associate Counsel or Policy Analyst staff providing legal, policy and budget analysis, and central staff support, for the Senate Majority Conference on matters referred to the committees on Education, New York City Education, Libraries, Higher Education, Labor, and Civil Service & Pensions. Particular emphasis is placed on knowledge and experience with concrete legislative and policy areas within these legislative issue areas;
•Tracking related legislation active in the state;
•Making oral presentations regarding on matters under consideration by the Legislature;
•Drafting memoranda analyzing policy initiatives and legislation;
•Preparing briefing materials for members of the Conference;
•Assisting Senators in preparation for public hearings, roundtable discussions, forums and other public meetings and events; and
•Networking and relationship building with stakeholders, advocates, and constituency groups.
Additional Comments The salary for this position is $90,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience and education.
