Duties Description Under the direction of the Accessibility Team Lead, the Engineer / Automation Specialist (P23) will play a key role in supporting New York State’s accessibility initiatives by developing and maintaining automated tools to audit and evaluate digital properties for accessibility compliance. This position will ensure that automated testing solutions are integrated into the accessibility audit process, facilitating compliance with WCAG standards across state websites and applications.

We are seeking an experienced Engineer / Automation Specialist with a strong background in digital accessibility testing and automation to support the technical operations of the Accessibility Team. This role will involve building and maintaining testing solutions, assisting in audit processes, and providing technical guidance for accessibility-related projects.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Build and deploy custom scripts and tools that leverage automated accessibility testing tools (e.g., pa11y, Axe) to audit digital properties across NYS websites and applications;

- Provide technical guidance to dedicated state agency teams for remediating accessibility issues;

- Research and implement new accessibility tools, testing methodologies, and automation approaches to improve audit efficient and accuracy;

- In collaboration with the Accessibility QA Lead, establish test plans and processes for accessibility audits;

- Conduct test plans and create clear and actionable remediation plans for compliance;

- Collaborate with design, development, and QA teams to integrate accessibility testing into the development lifecycle;

- Stay updated on the latest accessibility guidelines and best practices and ensure testing tools are configured to meet evolving accessibility requirements.

- Perform the full range of supervisory duties.

Minimum Qualifications - 3–5 years of experience in developing and maintaining automated testing tools, preferably with a focus on accessibility compliance;

- Strong knowledge of accessibility standards, including WCAG, ADA, and Section 508;

- Experience setting up and using manual audition tools for accessibility assessments, particularly to support remediation recommendations;

- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and the ability to integrate automated accessibility testing into the development process for continuous auditing and compliance checking;

- Proficiency in coding languages like Javascript, Python, or similar, with a focus on building and deploying automation processes;

- Experience working with accessibility testing tools like pa11y, Axe, SiteImprove, etc. And the ability to research, recommend, and implement other relevant tools;

- Certifications such as CPACC, WAS, or Trusted Tester are a strong plus;

- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, developers, and QA, to suggest accessibility solutions.
