Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of a higher-level scientist, the Research Scientist 2 will devote his/her time to biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories activities and develop molecular and protein-based based assays and whole-genome sequencing assays for high-risk fungal pathogens. The Research Scientist 2 will also validate molecular and protein-based tests and perform additional duties as required. The incumbent will also perform routine testing of the laboratory, including QC/QA.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have work experience or coursework in clinical laboratory sciences, microbiology, public health or infectious diseases. In addition, the candidate would have experience in handling of infectious clinical samples and/or human pathogens at biosafety level-2 containment. Experience with molecular techniques including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, assemblies of targeted and whole-genome sequences, phylogenetic analyses, and data interpretations, is particularly relevant. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.

Additional Comments Contingent Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
