Job Specifics

Duties Description This Associate Radiological Health Specialist (ARHS) will conduct mandatory public health inspections of facilities that use radioactive materials and x-ray producing equipment; investigating allegations of misconducts; and responding to accidents/incidents involving radioactive materials including medical events, transportation accidents, and damaged industrial gauges. The incumbent will review and evaluate complex applications to use radioactive materials, review radiation producing equipment applications and issues; and understand, modify, and implement regulations based off guidance and inspections reports. The ARHS will visit radiologically contaminated sites that require public health oversight/ supervision, report their findings, and analyze evaluation reports/ responses based off their inspections.

Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS Minimum Qualifications:

You must have either 1. A bachelor's degree or higher in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment.

Or 2. a bachelor's degree or higher in any area including or supplemented by 30 college semester credit hours in one or more of the following subject areas: health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology*, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.

Substitution:

An advanced degree in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, may be substituted for the required work experience as follows: master's degree - one year of experience; doctoral degree - two years of experience.

Promotion Provisional/NCP, Reassignment, and Transfer Options:

Promotional Provisional: Current New York State Department of Health employee with one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 18.

Non-Competitive Promotion: If there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in the appointment to this position, a permanent appointment may be made pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To be eligible, candidates must be an employee of the Department of Health and have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 18.

Reassignment/Transfer: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as an Associate Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 23 OR A New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer to an Associate Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 23.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience in radiation protection including knowledge of, and experience applying, both State and federal standards for protection from ionizing radiation. They will have familiarity with the use of radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials used for medical, academic and commercial purposes. The preferred candidate will have experience in quality assurance, auditing, inspecting and/or investigative practices. They will have the ability to analyze written and published program material and then draw conclusions regarding their data. The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
