Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Child Care Aide 2 position in the New York State School for the Blind. The NYSSB provides educational and residential services to students who are blind and have severe multiple disabilities. Under the direction of the Head of Department (Residential), major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ensure all phases of a resident’s treatment plan are implemented, including daily living skill training, personal hygiene, medical needs, recreational and socialization activities, and dietary needs;
• Schedule and assign Child Care Aide 1s (CCA 1s) and Child Care Aide 1 substitutes in order to ensure appropriate care and adequate ratios;
• Maintain accurate daily records of staff performance, time and attendance, and the fulfillment of treatment plans;
• Provide written guidelines, supervision, and instruction to CCA 1s as to the performance of specific tasks;
• Meet regularly with CCA 1s to discuss observations, new techniques, deficiencies, individual resident problems, and other matters influencing the operation of the Residential Department and its staff;
• Identify housekeeping and maintenance problems and report them to appropriate personnel;
• Assist with and report all occurrences of minor and major incidents on a daily basis;
• Function as a working supervisor as necessary to assist the CCA 1s in providing direct care to residents; and
• Provide feedback to all staff members regarding changes in resident behavior and progress or lack thereof.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have one year of experience in a position performing duties normally performed by a Child Care Aide 1.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration may be given to candidates with following qualifications:

• Experience in behavior modification, orientation and mobility, and/or certification in water safety, CPR, first aid, advanced first aid, or as an EMT.
• Bus Driver Certification/License under Article 19A.
• Experience working with Braille, American Sign Language and/or tactile sign.
• Demonstrated success in a supervisory capacity in a residential setting.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non-competitive, 12-month appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Sunday through Thursday, 3:00pm – 11:00pm.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $61,548 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
