Job Specifics
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 2 position at the New York State Museum (Albany, NY). Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 3 or higher, the incumbent will serve as the manager of the Quaternary Landscape Materials (QLM) Collection and Field, Database and Digital Mapping coordinator for the New York State Geological Survey (NYSGS). Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Serve as the NYSGS liaison to the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) to update, manage and coordinate geologic map submissions and maintain compliance with Geologic Map Schema (GeMS);
• Complete finalized digital geologic map production for submission requirements to the National Cooperative Geological Mapping Program (NCGMP);
• Manage the Museum’s QLM Soil Core Collections, overseeing more than 6,000 feet of Pleistocene sediment core. Ensure samples are stored according to museum and disciplinary standards and tracked using electronic database collections software or techniques;
• Provide information and access to the QLM Collections for institutions, researchers, and the public, facilitating research use, loans, and exhibits;
• Participate in fieldwork related to specimen sampling, core collection, and geological mapping; as well as fieldwork and projects related to grant funded research;
• Assist with development and coordination of budgets, purchasing, and travel for staff involved in the production of geological mapping-based research;
• Coordinate to arrange access for geologic mapping and subsurface drill core collection;
• Assist in the development of museum exhibits;
• Communicate information about the QLM Collections and mapping program to diverse audiences and families, with outreach to groups traditionally underrepresented in museums, including developing and delivering public programs, such as gallery talks, tours, program tabling, and hands-on activities;
• Supervise Museum Scientist 1s, R&C technicians, interns, volunteers, and students in field and laboratory collection techniques related to the acquisition and curation of geology specimens; and digital geologic mapping products.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, or a related field and two years of professional experience OR a Master’s Degree in Geology, or a related field and one year of professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Master's degree in geology, with experience in New York geology
• Experience creating and maintaining geological core sample records, including proficiency with digital collections software
• Experience in managing and tracking geological specimen loans
• Field and laboratory experience in geological sample and data collection
• Skilled in delivering collections tours and communicating with both scientific and general audiences
• Hands-on experience with bedrock drill core, cuttings, on-site drilling and logging, core descriptions, and geologic bedrock mapping
• Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, with familiarity in subsurface mapping software such as Petra or similar tools
• Supervisory experience with interns, volunteers, or students in collections management techniques
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive as a Museum Scientist 1.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. This position may require up to 40% in-state/Statewide travel.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $104,230 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
