Job Specifics
Duties Description This is a Seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position based in Cape Vincent, NY working on various fisheries projects in the Lake Ontario Unit. Duties will include but are not limited to assisting with data and sample collection and processing, data entry, preparing gear and equipment, and assisting with creel, gillnetting and trawling surveys. The technician will often work on various creel surveys monitoring angler success/effort including the Lake Ontario Angler Survey (Fishing Boat and Tributary) and Eastern Basin Creel Survey. The fishing boat survey runs from mid-April until mid-September each year and consists of anchoring a boat at channels and interviewing returning fishing boats. The tributary survey covers mid-September through mid-April and consists of driving a specified route covering multiple streams each day while performing counts and conducting interviews. The Eastern Basin survey is year round including an ice fishing survey and consists of conducting counts at access sites and interviewing returning anglers. The survey designs are different, however, all generally require the technician to work some week days, weekend days and holidays (w/holiday pay rate) with AM or PM shifts. Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record angler answers and biological data. Processing fish for length, weight, clip and scale samples is required. Must be able to safely trailer, operate, and work on board an 18’ boat during the boat survey. Technicians are required to work some overtime (overtime pay rate) during the boat survey and in a variety of inclement weather conditions on both projects. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience trailering and operating boats as long as 20 feet in length, interacting with the public and identifying salmon and trout.
