Job Specifics
Duties Description Will perform medical billing and claims processing, including payment, coordination or subrogation of benefits. Review claims for eligibility and explains coverage amounts and benefit plan interpretation to patients or their representatives. Review claims for irregularities, accuracy, completeness, and obtains additional information as needed. Use existing procedures to solve routine or standard problems. Complete follow-up activities on denied, unpaid, or underpaid accounts, as well as contacts payer representatives to research and resubmit rejected claims to obtain and verify insurance coverage. -Follow-up on unpaid accounts working claims, and review reasons for claim denial. Review the payer website or contacts payer representatives to determine why claims are not paid. Determine steps necessary to secure payment and completes and documents follow up by resubmitting claims or deferring tasks. Researche and calculate under or overpaid claims; determine final resolution. Contact payers on incorrectly paid claims completing resolution and adjudication. Adjusts accounts or processes insurance refund credits. Reviews and advises leadership on incorrectly paid claims from specific payers. Works with leadership to communication with payer representatives regarding payment trends and issues. Bills primary and secondary insurance claims. Identify and clarify billing issues, payment variances, and/or trends that require management intervention. Assist department leadership with credit balances, account reviews/resolutions, and all audits. Coordinate response and resolution to Medicaid and Medicare credit balances. Request insurance adjustments or retractions. Review and works all insurance credits in the electronic health record. Enter electronic health record notes, documenting actions taken. -Researches and responds to third-party correspondence, receives phone calls, and explains policies and procedures involving routine and non-routine situations. Assist with patient related questions. Communicate and coordinate with other departments to resolve claim issues. Assist with all audits as needed. May coordinate and/or train lower-level staff as required. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Reassignment: Current eligible New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as an Office Assistant 2.
Transfers: Current New York State employee with one or more years of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service in a position eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law to Office Assistant 2. Promotion Provisional Appointment: In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualifications: Be a current NYS Department of Health employee with one year as an office assistant, clerical, or keyboarding title allocated to Grade 6 or higher. Open Competitive HELPS qualifications: If less than three interested and qualified New York State Department of Health employees serving in the direct-line, lower-level title(s) within the agency apply to this opportunity, the agency may make a non-competitive appointment under the NY HELPS program: One year of experience where most work time is spent performing mathematical operations, and/or clerical activities related to mathematical operations.
