The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking highly motivated and experienced litigators to serve as Special Counsels on the Federal Initiatives team in the Executive Division. Special Counsels will join and lead litigation teams protecting the rights of New Yorkers. The Federal Initiatives team focuses on federal actions, laws, and regulations that impact immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ rights, workers’ rights, climate change, reproductive health, healthcare and public health, economic equity, racial equity, and discrimination. This position is in the New York City office.
In addition to litigation, Special Counsels will monitor legal and regulatory changes for their impact on New Yorkers and draft policy papers and recommendations. Depending on their area of focus, Special Counsels will also collaborate with community groups, other states, state agencies, local governments, nonprofits, and private attorneys.
Minimum Qualifications Qualifications:
• At least seven (7) years of post-graduate civil litigation experience in federal and New York state courts with experience handling constitutional litigation and actions under the Administrative Procedure Act;
• Experience coordinating with broad-based litigation teams;
• Excellent legal analysis, legal writing and editing, and oral advocacy skills; and
• Experience building and maintaining coalitions.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
