Job Specifics
Duties Description The Sergeant, Park Police, SG-17, will report to the Lieutenant, Park Police, SG-20, for the New York City Police Zone. As a Sergeant, you would supervise Park Police Officers and other staff assigned to the Park Police such as communications staff, and clerical staff performing police activities for the assigned shift. You would schedule and assign staff; reassign staff to cover emergencies or events within the Zone; observe and evaluate staff performance, assist in developing training programs; conduct on the job training and classroom instructions; conduct police investigations; act as liaison between Park Police Officers and local police; respond to emergencies and incidents as required; inspect, evaluate and maintain Division property and equipment, and prepare reports, budget requests, duty rosters and performance evaluations.
Minimum Qualifications Permanent Appointment:
Candidates must be reachable on civil service eligible list, #31-069010
Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP):
Candidates must be in the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation promotion field and have at least two years of permanent competitive service as a Park Police Officer, SG-14, or Park Police Officer (Spanish Language), SG-14. If 3 or fewer qualified NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employees eligible for promotion respond to this posting, Civil Service may approve the permanent appointment of one of the qualified employees without further examination. To be eligible for an NCP, candidates cannot have failed the last promotion examination for Sergeant, Park Police, SG-17.
Provisional Appointment:
Based on the results of the canvass and this posting notice, OPRHP may make a provisional appointment to this position. The minimum qualifications for provisional appointment are: two years of permanent competitive service as a Park Police Officer, SG-14, or Park Police Officer (Spanish Language), SG-14. The appointed candidate must take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the Sergeant, Park Police, SG-17, civil service examination.
Reassignment:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent permanent service as a Sergeant, Park Police, SG-17. Reassignments are made in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement according to Seniority.
Reinstatement:
Candidates who were previously permanently employed by New York State in this title may be reinstated to this position or to any position to which they were eligible to transfer. Employees separated from their positions may be reinstated within one year of the date of separation. Employees who have been separated from State service for more than one year may be reinstated upon approval of the New York State Civil Service Commission.
Additional Comments Operating Needs:
Candidates must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver’s license as a term and condition of employment and must be a New York State resident at the time of promotion and maintain New York State
residency as a term and condition of employment.
