Job Specifics
Duties Description Diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. Overhaul, adjust and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions and differentials, ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab and frame components. Conduct NYS inspections. Overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air and hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers and a variety of other equipment, including but not limited to, track vehicles, loaders (front-end and belt) cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, etc. Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems and air conditioning.
May be required to do cutting and welding. Make road calls and test drive equipment. Complete reports, use parts catalogs, and perform other related duties. Effectively utilize the department Asset Management software and DOT electronic systems to assist in repair, ordering, and managing the repair schedule and parts stock. This is a working supervisor position. It includes all SRM-ME duties along with those of a supervisor. It includes assigning staff to repair jobs, providing technical assistance, reviewing work orders for accuracy, completing PMs on time, and ensure fleet uptime to meet the regional fleet uptime needs. Overtime coverage is required to maintain fleet uptime. Confers with location supervisors and others to coordinate maintenance and repair schedules.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Promotional: One year of permanent competitive, non-competitive, 55-b/55-c, or labor class service as follows:
Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) or Construction Equipment Mechanic.
Open Competitive:
One year of experience supervising staff engaged in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of gasoline and/or diesel-powered motor equipment, including passenger vehicles, construction and heavy equipment, freight and other commercial cargo vehicles, self-propelled off-road equipment, and non-self-propelled motor equipment.
At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, you will be required to have a valid New York State Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction.
NOTE: Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
Additional Comments Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
*For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
The starting salary for this position is $65,506. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $56,506 with an additional geographical pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
The maximum compensation for this position is $77,603. This amount is comprised of the standard job rate of $68,603 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
In addition, a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $1,650 or a Downstate Adjustment of $3,400 may also apply depending on the location of the position.
