Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of an Information Technology Specialist 3 (Data Communications), SG-23, within the Chief Technology Office/Data Center Networks (DCN) Operations group, the Information Technology Specialist 2, SG-18, will be responsible for Cloud content filtering within the consolidated data centers, NYExchange (NYX), and within ITS managed Clouds.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Configure, install and troubleshoot Next Gen Firewalls within the consolidated data centers as well as within ITS managed Clouds.
• Troubleshoot carrier class network equipment, including end-to-end network connectivity using command line tools, e.g., PCAP, Wireshark, tcpdump etc.; perform analysis of packet captures, firewall logs and syslogs; understand data networking protocols including TCP/IP; OSI; OSPF; BGP; HTTP; SSL; DNS; TLS; and other LAN/WAN protocols.
• Test firewall rule modifications in the lab environment.
• Work with CISO on approvals for new access related to firewall changes.
• Work with the LAN Engineering teams.
• Work with Cloud teams.
• Work with Workplace Services when troubleshooting firewall issues.
• Work with User Accounts Management when being asked which content filtering groups provide what access.
• Work with Enterprise AD when configuring LDAP connections on the firewall.
• Work with the NYX team when troubleshooting User ID agent issues.
• Utilize the following languages and tools for troubleshooting: The browser's inspect function; Powershell; SharePoint; Webex; Splunk; and Linux.
• Review weekly workload with Grade 23.
• Review weekly incidents with the team.
• Plan, implement and support changes to the network including cable infrastructure, network software and hardware.
• Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation of active infrastructure, including Visio diagrams, operations procedures and training manuals.
• Coordinate with User Support and System Administrators to provide Level III support for technical solutions.
• Handle the tasks of providing network engineering input on major projects, upgrades, installations.
• Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities.
• Provide 24x7x365 on-call network support, on a rotating basis, for troubleshooting, escalation and ticket resolutions.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications Promotion: One year of permanent service as an Information Technology Specialist 1, Grade 14.

Open Competitive: A bachelor's or higher-level degree including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science; or a bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology; or 60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology; or two years of professional experience in information technology.

Additional Comments ITS will not offer permanent employment to any candidate unless the candidate provides documentation that they are authorized to accept work in the United States on a permanent basis. It is the policy of ITS not to hire F1 or H1 visa holders for permanent employment or to sponsor non-immigrant aliens for temporary work authorization visas or for permanent residence.

Some positions may require fingerprinting.

Some positions may require up to 25% travel and/or lifting up to 50 lbs. Some positions are pending Civil Service approval. Details of position(s) will be described further if you are selected for an interview.

If eligible, positions located in New York City will receive an additional $3,400 downstate adjustment location pay with regular annual salary. Positions located in the Mid-Hudson will receive an additional $1,650 adjustment location pay.

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
