Job Specifics

Duties Description Duties include but may not be limited to:
• Assist with performing architectural design and project management duties to complete complex architectural projects for new and rehabilitation of building plans and designs.
• Prepare architectural drawings and details, specifications, estimates, and/or studies for design projects under the direction of licensed staff.
• Prepare and coordinate design drawings and related specifications, construction costs estimates, etc., with the other disciplines.
• Assist in scheduling assigned projects according to workload, priorities, and design schedules.
• Assist in the review of reports, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by design consultants.
• Assist with the supervision of consultant design work.
• Develop and maintain project documentation, including records of meetings, correspondence, and progress
• Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
• Assist in review of submittals, respond to contractor Requests for Information, create and/or review Information Bulletins, and provide similar construction administration and observation during the project’s construction.
• Assist with supervision of junior staff.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Operational Needs:
• Travel may be required (approximately 20%).
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required.

Note:

*There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

The Office of the General Services (OGS) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OGS Design and Construction (D&C) will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s duties and work performance are aligned with telecommuting they may be allowed to do so. Upon approval to telecommute, OGS D&C employees may telecommute up to 4 days per pay period.
This position is graded and offers a salary range from the hiring rate to the job rate for its designated grade. All hires begin at “Start Rate” unless prior state experience affords eligibility for hiring step increase as determined by OSC.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Six years of architectural experience in design or drafting on buildings requiring multi-discipline trade involvement such as heating, plumbing, and electric. This experience must have been under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer. Qualifying experience includes work performed on institutional, commercial, healthcare, academic, office, or residential buildings (excluding single family or duplex family homes). You must explain your level of involvement and type of building(s) worked on.

OR
An associate’s degree in architecture, architectural technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology, or drafting technology with an emphasis on architecture AND four years of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer. Qualifying experience includes work performed on institutional, commercial, healthcare, academic, office, or residential buildings (excluding single family or duplex family homes). You must explain your level of involvement and type of building(s) worked on.

OR
A four-year bachelor’s degree in architectural/structural engineering studies AND two years of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect or professional engineer. Qualifying experience includes work performed on institutional, commercial, healthcare, academic, office, or residential buildings (excluding single family or duplex family homes). You must explain your level of involvement and type of building(s) worked on.

OR
A five-year bachelor’s degree in architectural studies or a master’s degree in architectural studies AND one year of architectural design or drafting experience under the direction of a registered architect. Qualifying experience includes work performed on institutional, commercial, healthcare, academic, office or residential buildings (excluding single family or duplex family homes). You must explain your level of involvement and type of building(s) worked on.

OR
An Architects license, with current registration, from any state or territory of the United States.

This title includes a traineeship opportunity, and applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in architecture and serve a minimum of 52 weeks and a maximum of 104 weeks of probation.

Appointees to the traineeship who obtain proof of valid passing scores for at least three of the six division examinations of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Architect Registration Examination (ARE) will advance to Assistant Architect, Grade 20, after one-year of service; those who fail to pass three of the six division examinations by the end of the second year of appointment will be terminated.


NOTE: IN ORDER TO AWARD THE PROPER CREDIT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE, RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME YOU MUST INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.
