Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of the Park Management team, this Trades Generalist at Saratoga Spa State Park will be engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the following systems:

• Potable water systems (from the point of supply to the point of use), both inside buildings/structures and underground facilities. This includes well systems (pumps, filtering, chlorination, piping, distribution, etc.) or municipal water services (metering, isolation, and distribution).
• Sewer and waste systems (from the point of use to the point of removal), both inside buildings/structures and underground facilities. This includes traditional septic systems (tank and leach field), sand filters and municipal sewer systems.
• Natural gas and propane systems (from the point of supply to the point of use), both inside buildings/structures and underground facilities. This includes gas services, propane tanks, distribution piping, and end-use appliances (e.g., Water heaters, stoves, and furnaces).
• Ventilation and air conditioning systems include building exhaust fans, HVAC units, heat pumps, central AC, and split units.
• Pool and Spa water filtration systems and mineral spring features.

Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

• Work from verbal or written descriptions or drawings and sketches, following blueprints or specifications, estimate labor and materials needed, obtain quotes from vendors and maintain records.
• Work with various types of pipes (copper, PVC, CPVC, cast, black iron, galvanized, HDPE, etc.)
• Visually inspect fixtures and equipment and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine the cause and location of problems and make necessary repairs or adjustments as needed.
• Assemble materials, tools, and equipment required for projects.
• Perform building winterization and start up as required annually.
• Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of associated tools and equipment as assigned and will order supplies and equipment as needed.
• Work independently or as a team; communicate effectively with the Park Management/Supervisor.
• Identify and communicate potential issues, safety concerns, or routine maintenance needs with management and colleagues as necessary and repairing when applicable.
• Supervise and instruct others in construction and repair of plumbing/HVAC systems, associated equipment including the safe use and maintenance of large and small equipment.
• Perform snow removal and ice making for ice rinks.
• Perform tree cutting, chipping and wood splitting.
• Perform grounds keeping and landscaping duties as needed including road and trail maintenance, mowing and weed whacking, and building maintenance and repairs.
• Must be committed to providing excellent customer service to park visitors by answering questions and addressing their concerns promptly and courteously.
• Coordinate with other site staff during special events and in emergency situations to ensure that guests have an enjoyable and safe experience.
• Perform other duties as assigned and required.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled
tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training,
apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Generalist.

Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be willing to keep up on all mandated safety training, including First Aid/CPR/AED, and follow safety standards.
• Must be able to lift, carry, and/or move equipment or materials of different weights and sizes, stand for prolonged hours, and work from scaffolding, ladders, and aerial lift devices.
• Will operate light trucks, tractors, aerial bucket truck, flat bed, front end loader, and other equipment as required. Use and maintain small equipment such as generators, power washer, miter saw, table saw, hand tools, etc.
• Must obtain Agency-approved chainsaw certification within 1 year of appointment and have ability to conduct chainsaw operations when needed.
• May be assigned to work weekends/holidays during the operating season.
