Job Specifics
Duties Description The Environmental Education Assistant for Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve and Environmental Education Center will be responsible for three main areas: 1) Reinstein Woods Programming, 2) campership candidates outdoor experiences, and 3) camper recruitment.
•RW Programming
Prepare and conduct seasonal programs for the public on environmental education topics
Conduct tours and programs for school groups, youth and adult organizations as needed.
Assist with major events and outreach efforts (e.g. festivals, Get Outdoors and Get Together Day, etc.)
Assist RW Environmental Education staff with programming for underserved audiences, including for new Americans, refugees, veterans, and accessibility groups
Support RW Environmental Educators by developing program materials
Occasionally support CNY Environmental Education staff with environmental education programming in Region 9
Perform “building duty” as needed
•Prepare and implement pre- and post- camp outdoor experiences for potential campership campers
Coordinate with community agencies, teachers, schools and DEC staff in other programs to provide outdoor experiences for identified campers and potential future campers (e.g. 10-year-olds)
Schedule programs in different seasons and locations to provide variety
Coordinate with partnering organization staff, parents, Reinstein Woods’ staff and volunteers to ensure adequate supervision of youth during the outings
Maintain records of campers and potential campers, including their participation, potential for camp, any issues, etc.
•Recruit youth to attend Camp Rushford
Coordinate with community agencies, teachers and schools to identify youth who would be good candidates to attend Camp Rushford
Assist youth and coordinate with parents to fill out all necessary forms.
Maintain a waiting list as needed.
Coordinate transportation of youth to camp from designated locations
Ensure campers arrive and depart from camp with appropriate forms, supplies, etc. by regularly communicating with campers and their parents
Promote camps and the campership programs to outside organizations
Work with Reinstein staff to identify and encourage “pipeline” students to go to camp
Represent DEC at career events to build pathways for environmental careers
Minimum Qualifications one year of experience in environmental education programs; or one year of college study with specialization in natural science, natural resources, or environmental education.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Travel may be required.

Weekends and holidays may be required.
