Job Specifics
Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Park Worker 3 may be engaged in the performance or coordination of, but not limited to, the following tasks and activities as described:
• Perform routine, semi-skilled light maintenance and general area maintenance including but not limited to litter control, grounds upkeep and landscaping, snow and ice control, and restroom facilities (supplies/cleanliness)
• Assist in inspections of assigned area for safety hazards, correct problems where possible and make recommendations to supervisor for appropriate skilled trades assistance when needed
• Assist in conducts inventory of tools, small equipment and supplies and submits recommendations to supervisor for ordering these materials
• Under direction of the Fish Culturalist, assists in the operation and maintenance of the Historic Trout Hatchery, cleaning troughs and raceways, feeding and stocking fish, and other maintenance as required
• Performs various maintenance and pruning tasks to help maintain the health of the river and fish, which will include the ability to work for periods of time wearing waders in water up to four and a half feet deep
• Operates light trucks, dump and garbage trucks, snowplows, passenger vehicles, tractors, ride-on mowers and other equipment as required
• Acts as shift supervisor for assigned area, and directs and coordinates subordinate staff (both full-time and seasonal) and trains subordinate staff in the proper use of small hand tools and in the operation and maintenance of lawn mowing and power edging tools as required
• Loads, moves, carries or unloads materials of varying weights and sizes as necessary
• Operates chainsaws
• Answers patron inquiries concerning park information and resolves patron complaints in the field
• Prepares and maintains a wide assortment of reports such as time sheets, vehicle use forms, project status reports, work orders, fuel reports, inventory and correspondence
• Assists in coordinating and executing recreation events conducted at the park.
• Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited* college or university;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson
*Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Park Worker 3.
Additional Comments Positions located within Suffolk County are also eligible to receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.
Salary Information:
Park Worker 3, SG-9 (CSEA) $46,641 - $56,413 (the starting salary indicated combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). Similarly, the job rate posted is a combination of the statutory job rate ($52,413) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
Operational Needs:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
Willing to receive NYS Sawyer Training Program Level 1,2, & 3, First Aid, CPR and AED training.Must be able to
work a variable schedule and will be required to work weekends, holidays and evening hours as needed.
Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Must have the ability to follow directions and communicate with staff, public, and respond to patrons' concerns or complaints in an effective and positive manner
Ability to work in water of varying temperatures year-round
