Job Specifics
Duties Description The Central Region has 18 State Parks and 6 Historic Sites which include glacially carved lakes, lush forested valleys, a military fort, waterfalls, segments of the Erie Canal, as well as 19th century estates. This is a 40 hour/week, Monday – Thursday, seasonal position. The typical workday will be 6:00am – 4:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch. Housing is not provided.
Trail Staff work under direction of higher-level staff to mitigate the degradation of trails by:
• Performing trail maintenance such as improving drainage, leveling treads, removing hazard trees, and performing general upkeep.
• Constructing new trails, stone structures, small bridges, boardwalks, staircases, and signage.
• Operating and maintaining shared state vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and some small equipment.
• Remove hazards such as risk trees, fallen trees, and debris using chainsaws or other tools.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor and to lift a minimum of 80 lbs.
• Must have the ability to work on uneven and steep terrain.
• Must be able to operate small, motorized equipment, including utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) and skid steers.
• Must travel to other parks within the region to meet the operational needs of the position.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Experience with outdoor labor, particularly tree work, trail maintenance, and construction or any of the following: dry stone masonry, carpentry, landscaping, general construction.
• Experience operating a chainsaw. NYS OPRHP Sawyer and CPR/First Aid training will be provided.
• Experience operating equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, UTVs.
