Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in media relations, communications, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required. Press experience in New York State is a plus. Knowledge of New York government and institutions also a plus. Excellent written and verbal skills are required. Management experience is preferred.

Duties Description The Executive Division of the New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a Press Secretary. As head of the OAG, the Attorney General is both the “People's Lawyer” and the State's chief legal officer. As the “People's Lawyer,” the Attorney General serves as the guardian of the legal rights of the citizens of New York, its organizations and its natural resources. In her role as the State's chief legal counsel, the Attorney General not only advises the Executive branch of State government, but also defends actions and proceedings on behalf of the State. The OAG also brings affirmative litigation and develops policy initiatives on topics including civil rights, health care, environmental protection, labor, financial regulation and enforcement, public integrity, consumer protection, housing, drug trafficking, nonprofit law and many others.

The Press Secretary will work closely with the Director of Communications and other senior staff to develop and execute effective communication strategies. The Press Secretary must develop and maintain relations with press, as well as media. Daily responsibilities of the Press Secretary will include interacting with top reporters in the political, financial, tech and criminal justice press; writing, reviewing and editing press releases, advisories and other relevant materials. This position reports to the Director of Communications and may be located in either Albany or New York City. Some travel may be required.
