Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications A. Be at least 16 years of age.
B. Successfully complete the NYS Lifeguard Qualifying Procedure administered by DEC or OPRHP.
C. At the time of employment must possess current certificates in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (or equivalent) and must include the Waterfront Module, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. A copy of all certifications must be reviewed by the central office and kept on file prior to the first day of employment. Copies of these certifications must also be kept on file at the facility and should be available upon request for beach inspections from DEC Central Office or the NYS Department of Health.
D. All lifeguards shall submit a DEC Medical Standards and Examination Findings for Lifeguards form signed by a licensed physician. All medical forms are kept confidential and must be submitted before the first day of a lifeguard’s employment with DEC. As part of the medical requirements, lifeguards must have a minimum of 20/70 uncorrected vision in each eye.
All NYS DEC Lifeguards must maintain all required certifications in current status for the duration of their employment. Lifeguards may not be scheduled for lifeguard duty unless all certifications are valid and current.
Duties Description A. Performing assigned Lifeguarding Duties;
B. Understanding the rules and regulations which apply to DEC swimming areas and assuring that the rules and regulations are observed by patrons using the bathing facility;
C. Preventing accidents and performing rescues;
D. Maintaining a high level of physical and mental fitness by active participation in weekly EAP drills;
E. Prepare or assist in preparing written reports of all accidents and rescues;
F. Performing other duties as assigned.
G. Must have dependable transportation and be able to work assigned shifts.
H. Position may require working at different beaches in the area as needed.
I. Must be punctual, reporting for work on time.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
Work hours and schedule will be discussed at the interview. This is a seasonal position with a duration of 5/1/19 - 9/31/19.
