Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess a minimum of two (2) years of civil litigation or other directly relevant experience. Excellent writing, analytical and organizational skills are also required. Candidates possessing experience in health advocacy, consumer protection and/or affirmative litigation are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to serve in its Health Care Bureau in New York City. The Health Care Bureau seeks to protect consumers from deceptive or illegal practices and to ensure access to health care by bringing civil prosecutions for violations of health, insurance, deceptive practice, antidiscrimination and other applicable laws. In addition, the Bureau advocates for legislation and policy initiatives to enhance the rights of health care consumers and their ability to access quality, affordable care in New York State. The Bureau has been recognized for its enforcement work in the areas of mental health parity and predatory practices, among other areas, as well as for its consumer Helpline, which assists in resolution of individual consumer complaints.

The selected attorney’s primary responsibilities will be to lead investigations and enforcement actions in furtherance of our mission to protect consumers and may include active litigation work to hold accountable those responsible for the opioids epidemic in New York and nationally. The Health Care Bureau cases typically seek injunctive relief, restitution, costs and penalties.
