Minimum Qualifications A doctoral degree in biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene/safety, engineering, environmental health/science and three years of post-degree professional research experience in occupational safety and health, injury prevention, work-related illness or a closely related field; or a Master’s degree in one of the above fields and five years of such experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Substantial experience in occupational epidemiology, injury epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, or social/behavioral epidemiology. Experience conducting and/or managing occupational epidemiology research projects; conducting and/or managing injury epidemiology research projects; management of work-related illness, injury, death, and hazardous exposure prevention programs; management of occupational safety and health programs; management of injury prevention programs. Experience with grant-writing and grant management. Experience interacting with and presenting to the public; communicating with scientists, policy makers and public officials.
Duties Description The Research Scientist 5 will serve as Bureau Director and will provide scientific and management leadership to the NYS Department of Health’s Bureau of Occupational Health and Injury Prevention. The Bureau consists of approximately 30 staff with varying expertise in epidemiology, industrial hygiene, injury prevention, statistics, environmental health, and other public health fields. Bureau staff monitor and address occupational illness and both occupational and non-occupational injuries, provide worksite consultation services, and oversee a statewide network of clinics specializing in diagnosis and prevention of occupational diseases. The Bureau manages the certification and training of asbestos-removal workers. The Bureau supports illness and injury prevention activities using data from the occupational lung disease registry, heavy metals exposure registry, workplace fatality data and investigations, and the violent death reporting system. Injury prevention programs include initiatives for older adult falls, pedestrians, child passenger safety, teen drivers, older driver safety, and bicycle safety. The incumbent will provide leadership, guidance and direction for all aspects of the Bureau’s mission, including occupational and injury data collection, management, surveillance, and research; illness and injury prevention programs; and occupational intervention programs
