Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a High School Diploma, or equivalent. Individuals must have the legal right to work in the United States; have good interpersonal skills; and have the ability to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends and some holidays. Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping and climbing are required, as well as, the ability to visually observe and assess various bout activities.
Knowledge of combative sports and New York State’s regulation of combative sports is necessary and required. Candidates must also presently serve as Inspectors or staff with the New York State Athletic Commission and have served in such position for at least two (2) years. Candidates must have the ability to travel throughout the State, and, from time to time as necessary, to areas where mass transportation may not be available.
Preferred Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Driver’s License and the ability to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
Duties Description The New York State Athletic Commission (SAC) regulates authorized combative sports within the state of New York pursuant to Article 41 of the General Business Law and oversees hundreds of events annually across the State. The SAC is committed to promoting and maintaining the health, safety and integrity of its regulated athletic activities via the administration of licenses, enforcement of rules and regulations, the oversight and sanctioning of matches and exhibitions, and ensuring that that medical and safety standards are being met. SAC also provides training seminars for referees, judges, and staff.
Deputy Commissioners are assigned on a per diem basis by SAC staff to assist in the management and oversight of combative sports and professional wrestling events occurring in the State, and report directly to the Executive Director, Director of Boxing, Director of MMA and other SAC staff, as directed. At events, the Commission may assign Deputy Commissioners different tasks.
Illustrative duties of a Deputy Commissioner include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Enforcing all applicable statutes, regulations and/or policies of SAC;
• Assisting with inquiries and inspections of licensees, applicants, and venues for compliance with SAC statutes, regulations and/or policies;
• Supervising other SAC personnel (Inspectors) assigned to events;
• Attending pre-bout weigh-ins, matches/events, and wrestling exhibitions as assigned by SAC;
o Addressing contract issues at weigh-in (i.e., overweight boxers failing to make their contracted weight);
• Command center staffing, management, oversight and coordination at regulated events;
o Ensuring venue has adequate medical personnel, including an ambulance;
o Coordinating with venue security as needed;
o Ensuring proper seating arrangements for SAC officials during a contest;
o Coordinate proper timing for the “walk-out” of each combatant with the promoter;
o Scorekeeping-Tabulating scoring from the judges for official SAC results;
• Back of house coordination and supervision at professional boxing and professional mixed martial arts events;
o Coordinate and ensure proper assignment of SAC officials backstage;
o Overseeing dressing room activities including, collection of urine and gloving of combatants;
o Collect and assign gloves issued by the promoter to the appropriate SAC Inspectors and/or Deputy Commissioners;
o Provide and collect urine specimen cups to the appropriate SAC Inspector and/or to a laboratory courier if available;
• Supervising the ringside area and corners at professional boxing and professional mixed martial arts events;
• Providing payments to officials and combatants are provided and that the provision of such payments is confirmed/recorded; and
• Performing other combative sports related duties as directed by SAC staff.
Deputy Commissioners are required to work the duration of the event, generally reporting two (2) hours prior to the event. Depending on the nature of the assignment, assignments may range from approximately 4 - 6 hours to approximately 8 - 12 hours.
Additional Comments Deputy Commissioners are compensated at a variable rate per diem, depending upon the nature of the sporting event worked.
Events take place throughout New York State, and Deputy Commissioners are expected to be willing to cover to events as assigned; please indicate geographic areas, if any, in which you are unwilling to consider employment (e.g. Statewide; City of Utica; Suffolk County; etc.) Applicants must submit to a background check.
These positions are travel intensive, and travel may constitute up to 100% of the candidate’s time.
Please note that these four (4) positions require current experience as an Inspector with the State Athletic Commission.
