Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's Degree and four years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and three years of professional research experience in that field; or a Doctorate in the appropriate field and one year of such experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. A Master of Science or higher degree in Physical or Atmospheric Sciences or related field is preferred.
Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the following fields: Chemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry, Instrumentation, Data Interpretation.
Duties Description Under the general direction and supervision of the Research Scientist IV (Chief, Monitoring Support Section), the incumbent will carry out the assigned tasks independently and initiate research work consistent with the Division goals and regulatory framework. The incumbent will assist in the development of validated datasets, technical reports and memoranda for use in air quality assessments and regulatory proceedings. The incumbent will demonstrate such capabilities by undertaking independent work and representing the Division at scientific, technical and policy meetings.
The Research Scientist III will be responsible for the Statewide operation and data reduction for all of the filter based and continuous speciation, specialized gas and particle analysis instruments and non-conventional (sensor) instrumentation. These instruments are deployed at important areas in the State where pollutant impact uncertainties exist. Duties include researching and evaluating the newest technologies, purchasing instrumentation, deploying instrumentation, validating data, working with Academic researchers and publishing results and findings in peer reviewed journals.
The Research Scientist III will also be responsible for the development and implementation of sampling programs utilizing non-conventional (sensor) instrumentation. These relatively inexpensive instruments are often interfaced with citizen scientists in local scale air quality monitoring studies. The sensors must be evaluated against accepted air quality monitoring methods and their limitations must be clearly communicated to management, other scientists and the public. This responsibility will expand as the NYS Climate Initiative is implemented over the next three years.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime and overnight travel may be required.
