Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist (G14)- Bachelor’s degree in clinical genetics or a related field and one year of
professional experience in that field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field
may be substituted for the required experience.
Research Scientist 1 (G18) – Bachelor’s degree in clinical genetics or a related field and two years of professional
post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a master’s degree in clinical genetics or a related field
and one year of post-degree experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualification:The preferred candidate will have work experience or course work in clinical genetics and clinical laboratory testing;
working knowledge of neometric systems and Excel software for entering/editing case reviews; experience with
public health clinical testing, excellent written and communication skills. Previous experience with tandem mass
spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatograph would be beneficial.

Duties Description The incumbent will have a dual role in the New York State Newborn Screening Program including follow-up
activities and laboratory-based clinical testing activities; performing assays for congenital hypothyroidism,
congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hemoglobinopathies and cystic fibrosis; reviewing and release of laboratory test
data; independent routine communications with newborn screening specialty care centers throughout New York
State to ensure that case referrals are handled appropriately and expeditiously; will manage case reviews and
ensure that critical and borderline screening results are monitored and tracked through case closure. Additionally,
will perform critical laboratory assays using wet-chemical and instrumental methods to identify newborns with
inherited metabolic disorders.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with
this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and
may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In
addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position, satisfactory
background checks may also be required. Weekend, holiday and overtime may also be required.
