Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Duties Description Sample fish (anadromous target species Atlantic sturgeon, Striped bass, American shad, River herring) in the Hudson River using large nets, seines and electrofishing. Fish are captured using one of the mentioned gears and then processed (length and weight taken) and tagged. Tagging helps track movement and also develop mortality rates for some species. All data is used in the coast wide management of the fish stocks.
Preferred qualifications: Knowledge of use of large fishing gears, operation of outboard boats, fish ID. Ability to lift 50 lbs, maneuver in/out of boats, strenuous pulling. Experience in data entry, scale prep, equipment maintenance. Background in marine fisheries helpful. Boating Operation Certification preferred. Incumbent required to complete certification course within one month of appointment.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Early work day start times and late work day end times.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 11/30/2020. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
