Minimum Qualifications Current license and registration to practice medicine in New York State, AND board-eligible or board-certified in a medical specialty AND either a master’s degree in Public Health or one-year experience in a public health program.

Preferred Qualifications: Fellowship in Applied Public Health; experience in environmental and/or occupation medicine.

Duties Description The Center for Environmental Health applies scientific, medical, & public health expertise to identify, understand and prevent risks to human health in NYS’s living and working environments. It is critical for the Center to have a physician with experience in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of individuals who may have been environmentally exposed to toxic substances. The Center has relied on at least one physician that has worked across program areas to provide guidance and clinical perspective on complex environmental health issues.
The Public Health Physician 2 (G38) will serve as Medical Director for the Center and will be responsible for developing and monitoring a variety of environmental health programs; working directly for the Center Director to develop program policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines. The Medical Director will be responsible for drafting field guidance to provide procedural, program, regulatory, and clinical guidance to local health authorities, including physicians. In addition, the Medical Director works with staff from the various research and surveillance programs to design and execute studies related to worker exposures, assessment of human exposures to environmental contaminants, and use program data to evaluate outcomes and adjust program goals. In addition, there are several programs that the Medical Director will play a critical role in, including: providing guidance for the treatment of lead poisoned children; conducting clinical case reviews for the Congenital Malformations Registry; providing medical oversight for the Occupational Health Clinic Network; leading illness outbreak investigations; and working to strengthen communications with medical providers on environmental health issues. The Medical Director will also represent the Center on a variety of state and national committees to promote understanding and cooperation with program goals.
