Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or a USAFI GED certificate (high school level) OR a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience assisting in engineering or related work, at the rate of six months of experience for one year of high school.
Undergraduate degree or course work in the physical sciences (meteorology, environmental science, chemistry, earth science, physics, environmental engineering or studies) is preferred. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience in Microsoft Excel and Access software programs.
Duties Description The Engineering Aide position in the Bureau of Air Quality Analysis & Research will provide important support to the Impact Assessment and Meteorology section. This section is responsible for the review of air quality impact analyses to support permitting activities and provides Air Quality Index forecasts to alert the public when unhealthy air quality is expected in the state. The Engineering Aide will assist in data analyses regarding ozone formation and air quality forecasting for the NY-NJ-CT Ozone Non-Attainment area. In addition, the selected candidate will work with Research Scientists in the Air Toxics Section to help with the review of analyses submitted in support of permits subject to 6 NYCRR Part 212 and to assist with research of contaminants of emerging concern. The Engineering Aide will be responsible for the following tasks:
• Provide air quality forecasting support and technical assistance.
• Prepare graphical and statistical analysis of meteorological and air quality data sets to explore relationships between monitoring sites and weather patterns.
• Assist in the review of air quality impact assessments and provide support for permit application review.
• Assist dispersion modelers with data entry and simple maps of model inputs/outputs.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
This is a part-time, seasonal position through March 31, 2022. Program needs and/or funding will determine the actual termination date of the position which may be prior to the date indicate here.
