Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Doctorate degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, or a related degree and four or more years of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the above requirements, preferred candidates will have at least ten years of professional work experience in epidemiology within a governmental public health organization, including experience leading public health programs; extensive familiarity with a variety of communicable disease surveillance and outbreak response activities; experience conducting or leading work as part of CDC cooperative agreements or research programs (such as the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity cooperative agreement or the Emerging Infections Program), experience conducting public health related research/studies and publishing findings; experience presenting to professional/scientific audiences; experience providing technical assistance and training to public health colleagues and external partners; experience supervising staff; and excellent organizational and communications skills.
Duties Description The incumbent will serve as Director for the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control (BCDC). BCDC is a large, complex, and high-profile Bureau that is responsible for the control and prevention of over 60 communicable diseases through investigation, surveillance, research, and education. The incumbent will provide leadership and direction to the Bureau’s five programs in their responses to established communicable disease problems and outbreaks and will guide the development of appropriate public health responses to newly emerging communicable disease threats as they appear (e.g. Ebola, Zika, COVID-19). The incumbent will provide epidemiologic guidance for regional staff and external partners such as local health departments and academic institutions. Additionally, the incumbent will guide Bureau research and public health research-like activities and will provide direction, technical assistance, and mentorship to lower-level researchers, other public health personnel, and trainees. The incumbent will review technical documents, manuscripts, and projects for Bureau-level approval to ensure quality and suitability for higher-level approvals. The incumbent will supervise multiple managers and other professional staff such as physician medical directors, veterinarians, and epidemiology program leads.
Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Routine travel, including occasional overnight travel and travel to areas which may not be served by public transportation, is required. (~15%)
