Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications "Provisional Promotion*: NYS DOH employee with one year or more permanent or contingent-permanent competitive or 55-b/55-cservice as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, G-18.

Provisional (public) candidates*: Either 1. a bachelor's degree or higher in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.

Or 2. a bachelor's degree or higher in any area including or supplemented by 30 college semester credit hours in one or more of the following subject areas: health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, AND three years in radiation protection which includes experience dealing with radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment. Experience limited to imaging patients is NOT qualifying.

Substitution: An advanced degree in health physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or hydrology, may be substituted for the required work experience as follows:
?master's degree: one year
?doctoral degree: two years

You must clearly indicate how you meet the remaining year(s) of required experience.

If your bachelor's degree or higher is not in one of the areas listed above in the minimum qualifications, but you qualify by having 30 semester credit hours in any combination of those subject areas, you MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s) or a course list which includes the name of the college or university, course title, date received (or expected), and number of semester credits received per course. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in radiation proctection including state and federal standards for ionizing radiation. Familiar with the various uses of radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials used for medical, academic and commercial purposes; inspection and investigative experience; the ability to analyze written and published program material and draw conclusions concerning its impact; the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment; experience in project management; and advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, and Access.


Duties Description Serve as the MARO Radiologic Health Specialist involved in the inspection of facilities and individuals authorized to use ionizing radiation; participate in the registration of radiation installations and licensure of radioactive material facilities. Supervise the activities of subordinate radiologic health specialists engaged in the inspection of radioactive material licensees and radiation installations. Personally conduct inspections, especially the most complex ones; investigate accidents/incidents and recommend appropriate action; conduct investigations of allegations regarding professional conduct of Radiologic Technologists; recommend enforcement action when indicated; provide consultation and assistance to local health departments on the more complex aspects of radiological health programs. Conduct and participate in training programs; evaluate and assist in the development of standards for x-ray installations; development of regulatory guides and manuals; and prepare program evaluation reports. Participate in the evaluation of sites that may have radioactive materials contamination wherein involvement and may require multiagency coordination.

Additional Comments Permanent, full-time (transfer) or provisional pending exam. This position involves travel which may include locations not served by public transportation.
