Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Duties Description Under the direct supervision of F&W Technician 2’s and Biologists, assist with the collection of water samples & physical data while working on small to medium sized (12' to 21') outboard powered boats. Boating activities are conducted year round, 4-5 days per week, and typically 2-6 hours per day. DEC program provides suitable foul weather gear, cold water protection suits, boots and personal flotation devices. DEC sponsored boating safety training to be provided to staff when available. Assist the DEC Microbiology Laboratory when necessary and assist Biologists with shoreline pollution source surveys.

• Making and recording observations about the environment: characteristics of marine waters & shellfish; pollution sources (sewage outfalls, storm drain pipes, waterfowl, boats, non-point sources, etc.)
• After on-the-job-training and demonstration of knowledge of sampling sites and collection protocol, occasional independent work with Town personnel collecting samples from onboard Town boats.
• Assist lab staff with the preparation of media, supplies and materials and cleanup of used supplies and materials.
• Work with possible exposure to bad odors, toxins, bacteria or viruses and handle shellfish.
• Familiarity with, and comfort aboard outboard powered boats is beneficial. Must be comfortable in and around water. Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
• Requires agility and moderate physical exertion: climbing on/off boats at launching ramps/piers/docks and ladders; pushing boats on/off trailers; lifting coolers with samples; lifting buoys and anchors; outdoor work in hot and cold weather as well as rain and snow.
• Read maps and nautical charts to locate sampling stations, pollution sources, erect "closed area" signs, install buoys and other markers to designate "uncertified" areas.
• Assist Biologists and F&W Techs with the entry of bacteriological, environmental, spill and emergency closure data into computers & proofreading data. Familiarity with Access, Excel, Word, GIS, or other database management software is beneficial.
• Under direction of F&W Techs and/or Biologists: Maintain field equipment and supplies.

May occasionally be assigned to assist other BMR programs: Shellfish Management, Crustaceans, Finfish, Diadromous (striped bass, etc.) - with their field work fisheries surveys, collecting samples, distributing shellfish seed or spawner stock, etc. Occasional office related duties: answering phones, preparing mailings; filing.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Must have certification to operate motorized boats or personal water crafts at time of appointment.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 11/30/2021. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to date listed. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
