Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Permanent status as an Addictions Program Specialist 1 (G-18) and interested in reassignment; OR reachable for permanent appointment on the current Civil Service eligible lists for Addictions Program Specialist 1, G-18 OR Addictions Program Specialist Trainee OR eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law OR Qualify for Provisional appointment as described below.

Provisional Qualifications:
To qualify for provisional appointment, candidate must have a bachelor’s degree AND
Either 1. two years of professional clinical* or professional administrative experience** in a public or private agency/program which directly provides diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, or aftercare to a clientele with a primary diagnosis of chemical dependency
Or 2. a master’s degree in community mental health, counseling, mental health counseling, education, human services, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, rehabilitation, social work, or sociology and one year of professional clinical* or professional administrative experience ** in a public or private agency/program which directly provides diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, or aftercare to a clientele with a primary diagnosis of chemical dependency.

*Professional clinical experience for this examination is defined as the care, treatment, or instruction of patients in the disciplines of addictions counseling, mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, nursing, psychology, social work, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, or as a physician’s assistant.
**Professional administrative experience for this examination is defined as experience in the fields of personnel management, employee relations, budgeting, fiscal and business administration, or administrative planning and analysis. Experience must be focused on the planning, developing, oversight, coordination, or operation of programs.


NOTE: We unfortunately cannot use PCO/PATT scores to appoint candidates to this position.

Duties Description The incumbent will be assigned to the Application Review Team in the Credentialing Unit and will be responsible for the review of Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) and Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP)/Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS) applications. The incumbent will review the applications for completeness and compliance with regulatory requirements and make determinations on applicants’ eligibility for examinations and CASAC Trainee certification. The incumbent will also provide technical assistance to applicants and other individuals seeking credentialing information via the Credentialing Information Line, prepare written responses to inquiries made through the Credentialing Mailbox and promote the credentials at conferences and recruitment events (some travel required).

Grade 18 - $56,604 – $71,980
Trainee 1 - $42,986 – $55,008
Trainee 2 - $45,455 – $58,028
(2-year traineeship leading to a Grade 18)
