General Public:
Candidates must have a New York State Professional Engineer’s License and current registration and a qualifying* bachelor’s degree or higher OR A New York State Professional Engineer’s License and current registration and one year of full-time experience performing engineering duties in hazardous liquid, petroleum, steam, or natural gas pipeline safety or enforcement.

Duties Description The Professional Engineer 1 (Gas Pipeline Safety), Grade 24, at the Department of Public Service independently performs professional engineering duties related to the regulation of natural gas, hazardous liquid, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and steam pipeline systems. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Supervising, training, and assisting subordinate personnel.
• Performing the more complex construction inspections, investigations of incidents involving natural gas and hazardous liquids pipelines, and facility design reviews including proposed modifications for design plans of construction projects and facilities involved in incidents.
• Reviewing inspection reports completed by Assistant Engineers.
• Evaluating operator programs and procedures to assess, manage, and control pipeline risks.
• Using professional engineering expertise to testify as part of administrative proceedings on behalf of the Department of Public Service
Additional Comments The primary mission of the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) is to ensure affordable, safe, secure, and reliable access to electric, gas, steam, telecommunications, and water services for New York State’s residential and business consumers, while protecting the natural environment. The Department also seeks to stimulate effective competitive markets for clean, renewable, and distributed energy resources that benefit New York consumers, as well as product and service innovations.
Under New York State Education guidelines, all professional engineers must practice only in their area(s) of competency or they may be subject to disciplinary action. It is your responsibility to be knowledgeable of any restrictions that are based on law or regulation, as well as those that relate specifically to your area of professional competence. Continued employment as a Professional Engineer 1 is dependent upon continued possession of a New York State Professional Engineer's license with current registration. Failure to maintain your New York State License and registration may result in removal from the Professional Engineer 1 title. Appointment to this position is contingent upon Division of Budget freeze wavier approval. This position may require up to 25% travel and as such, it may require that you have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate an ability to perform the required field work if public transportation is not available. Candidates will be further advised of the travel requirements at their employment interview, if chosen to interview.
