Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience in carpentry work under the supervision of a skilled carpenter, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course in carpentry.

Duties Description The State University of New York System Administration, located in Albany, New York is searching for a temporary Maintenance Assistant (Carpenter) in the Plaza Operations Maintenance Department. As assigned, a Maintenance Assistant (Carpenter) functions as part of a crew or a lead worker over a small building maintenance crew performing construction and usually consisting of maintenance helpers or laborers. Working from blueprints, drawings, oral or written instructions and using carpenter's hand tools and power tools, a Maintenance Assistant (Carpenter) performs a variety of semiskilled construction activities in the carpentry trade including, but not limited to the following:

-Repairs structural woodwork and equipment such as doors, window sashes, storm windows, screens, window guards, stairs and railings.
-Repairs, installs and adjusts locks, door closures, hinges, door checks and door hardware.
-Installs glass in windows, doors and partitions.
-Assists supervisor in such construction activities as erection or renovation of building systems, and in the repair and construction of roofs.
-Builds forms for concrete work.
-Erects and moves wall partitions.
-Installs and replaces damaged floor and ceiling tile.
-Replaces quoin, miter and fender timbers on lock gates.


Requirements:

-Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment of the carpentry trade.
-Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and materials of the carpentry trade.
-Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
-Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
-Ability to read plans and specifications.
-Ability to lead the activities of a subordinate staff.
-Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
-Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolding's and platforms.

State Title: Maintenance Assistant (Carpenter), Grade 09

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Occasional early morning, evening and additional overtime hours may be required.

Candidates should be aware that a preferred list, transfer list, placement roster and/or reemployment roster of laid off state employees may be certified against this vacancy by the Department of Civil Service.
