Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) years of civil litigation experience. Excellent writing, analytical and organizational skills are required. Candidates possessing experience in consumer protection and/or affirmative litigation in federal and state court are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in consumer issues in the area of student lending is a plus. Fluency in other languages (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, etc.) in addition to English is also a plus, but not required.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a dedicated and motivated attorney for its Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection (CFP) in New York City. CFP enforces consumer protection laws and pursues civil prosecutions against businesses and individuals engaged in fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or illegal trade practices. Cases typically seek injunctive relief, restitution for consumers, costs and penalties.
CFP conducts investigations and litigates in a variety of areas involving consumer protection, this includes being a leader in the area of student loans and for-profit educational institutions. The Bureau’s work in this area involves investigating and litigating deceptive practices by for-profit schools and student loan servicers, participating in Department of Education rulemaking and promoting policies at the state and federal levels that assist student loan borrowers by ensuring they receive the protections to which they are entitled.
