Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience in a related field (architecture, engineering, non-profits capital projects) OR 9 years of experience in a related field. Two years of this experience must have been at a supervisory level.

Preferred Qualifications:
• An understanding of capital projects, including construction budgets and the architectural design process.
• Project management experience, including tracking and reporting on multiple concurrent projects, and the ability to read, understand, and communicate contract requirements.
• Highly organized with strong management skills and ability to work optimally in a fast-paced setting with multiple deadlines.
• Working knowledge of capital projects in the non-profit arts sector of New York State is an asset.

Duties Description Founded in 1960 as the first state arts agency in the country, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is a leading source of funding for the vibrant arts and cultural sector across the state. New York is home to over 500,000 arts workers and a creative economy that generates $123 billion per year. NYSCA funding, which reaches all 62 state counties, is a valuable catalyst for the growth of New York’s creative ecosystem and a driver of community-building and the well-being of all New Yorkers.

NYSCA is seeking a Project Director to provide project and contract management for its Capital Program. The program, which is funded through legislation, provides grants for capital improvements to enhance the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of arts and cultural organizations within New York State. These opportunities stimulate long-term economic development and provide transformative funding for our state’s cultural organizations by stabilizing their facilities, bolstering their artistic efforts, and strengthening their services to their communities.

The Project Director will report to the current Deputy Director of Programs and Program Director for Capital Projects. Grant-funded activities can be complex and typically take 3 – 5 years to complete, which makes ongoing communication with grantees essential to the program. There are currently approximately 90 ongoing capital projects, with grants ranging from $49,500 to $2.4 million. A significant number of new grants are expected to be awarded in 2021 with a $20 million Capital budget.

To support this program, the new contract position will take on the following responsibilities:
• Contract Management: Communicate with grantees about required contract materials; review submitted materials for completeness and appropriateness, prepare contracts for agency approval, and track contract progress to troubleshoot delays.
• Grantee Relations: Act as primary point of contact for prospective applicants and current capital grantees to answer questions regarding opportunities and grant decisions and stay informed about project milestones.
• Project Status Management: Prepare and maintain a dashboard of active contracts, so that internal stakeholders can understand the status of projects and funding. Prepare additional more detailed reports as needed.
• Panel Evaluation Support: Assist with guideline preparation, panel process, and applicant feedback communication

Additional Comments This position is a direct result of a FY2022 Capital appropriation and will last a minimum of 1 year, with likelihood of extension. The position will also oversee ongoing Capital grant awards from FY18, 19, and 20

Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
