Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in archaeology, anthropology, history, or in one of the natural sciences (biology, zoology, geology) AND one year of experience assisting in scientific or historical research in the field or in artifact/specimen care and maintenance in a laboratory or a museum.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Research and Collections Technician position in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 2, the incumbent will be responsible for the identification and care of specimens and artifacts in the Native American archaeology collection. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Physically process the archaeological artifacts in the collection, including cleaning, organizing, labeling, rehousing, and incorporating into Museum storage, using NYSM standard practices;
• Identify and catalogue individual archaeological artifacts, including primarily Native American materials;
• Employ excavators’ notes, diagrams, and reports to determine artifact proveniences;
• Enter catalog and related data into electronic databases;
• Physically process the documentation (such as field notes, reports, maps, images, negatives) for these archaeological materials, including organizing, labeling, rehousing, and incorporating into Museum storage, using NYSM standard practices;
• Photograph objects, scan documents, and incorporate images into electronic databases;
• Assist curators and collections staff with exhibits, public programs, tours, researcher visits and requests, and other educational/research activities related to the collections.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent-permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. * Leads to a maximum salary of 58,028 based on annual performance advances.
