Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications One year of experience as a skilled journey-level mason subsequent to the completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Trades Supervisor (Mason & Plasterer) may be engaged in the performance of or coordination of the following activities working from verbal or written descriptions or drawings and sketches:
1. supervises and trains journey-level masons and other semi-skilled and relatively unskilled subordinate staff assigned

2. examines blueprints and sketches to determine dimensions, materials and labor requirements to accomplish the project, & orders the required materials and supplies

3. estimates, plans & lays out job assignments according to established work priorities

4. makes recommendations to supervisor on the need for specific materials needed in the performance of repairs; is responsible for ordering and maintenance of adequate levels of supplies to accomplish duties described

5. observes and inspects work while in progress and when completed to ensure that job is done properly, on schedule and according to plan; also, inspects work performed by outside contractors to ensure conformance with project specifications

6. meets with various trade supervisors involved in projects to coordinate activities and schedules work to be performed to ensure that work continues on schedule

7. operates light trucks and other motor vehicles as required to get to various facilities in the performance of duties

8. may be required to load and unload materials, tools and equipment of varying weights and sizes as needed in the performance of duties assigned

9. keeps written records of work performed and accounts for labor and materials used; prepares other paperwork as required

10. prepares written evaluations periodically of the work performed by subordinate staff; meets with staff periodically to discuss work performance and problems; may prepare written counseling memos

11. meets with park managers and contractors to coordinate ongoing projects

12. keeps abreast of the latest trends in the masonry trade, revision to building codes, and the latest safety regulations and applies them as required

13. may be involved in the rehabilitation and/or preservation of historic buildings

14. performs other related duties as required

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS
Selected candidate must possess and maintain a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator’s
License by date of appointment as a term and condition of employment;
Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications;
Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and materials of the masonry & plastering trades;
Ability to supervise and train others;
Ability to read and understand written and/or verbal material and instructions;
Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, to climb, bend & do moderately heavy lifting;
Ability to work from scaffolds and ladders;
